‘Culture of fear’: Teachers declare ‘no confidence’ in student services leadership

In an email to Superintendent Theresa McGuinness and the School Committee, the union representing Marblehead teachers declared "no confidence" in the leadership of the district's student services department, which supports children with learning challenges. "In response to concerns about the culture and climate in Marblehead schools, the MEA asked members if they had confidence in the abilities of Student Services Director Paula Donnelly and Associate Director of Student Services Emily Dean," wrote MEA Co-Presidents Jonathan Heller and Sally Shevory. Parent raises concern about ‘challenged book’ project

The mother of an eighth-grade student asked the School Committee on Dec. 7 to respond to an English assignment focused on readings on the American Library Association’s list of most frequently challenged books. Melanie Andrews’ child, along with a classmate, initially chose “The Bluest Eye” by Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. Written in 1970, “The Bluest Eye” tells the story of an 11-year-old Black girl who believes that she is ugly and that lighter skin and blue eyes would make her beautiful. She lives in a violent family and is raped by her father. A Marblehead mom spoke to the School Committee about a reading assignment involving ‘The Bluest Eye,’ a book by Nobel Prize-winning author, Toni Morrison. “I did what most parents would do — I Googled the book,” Andrews t...

MARBLEHEAD CHRONICLES: Holiday traditions in the town’s early days

In most of Colonial New England, Christmas wasn’t a popular holiday. Boston Divine Cotton Mather wrote in 1712 that the “Feast of Christ’s Nativity is spent in Reveling, Dicing, Carding, Masking, and in all Licentious Liberty ...by Mad Mirth, by long eating, by hard Drinking, by lewd Gaming, and by rude Reveling...” In Marblehead, the Colonial candle tradition of welcome continues. COURTESY PHOTO Christmas celebrations were frowned on, and caroling was condemned. But the town of Marblehead carried on, known for particularly notorious celebrations, despite officials’ best efforts to quash Christmas observances throughout the colony. In 173, a battle over the celebration of Christmas developed in Marblehead. Parson John Barnard of the First Congregational Church was opposed to Chri...

MHS Headlight: Eco-friendly holiday shopping guide

Buy Local: Not only is it a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but it is also a great way to support local businesses and artists! Bonus points if you buy locally grown foods for your holiday meals. Avoid Wrapping Paper: Why buy and use tons of paper that just gets thrown away when you can DIY-it! Use old newspapers, brown paper bags, or cloth to wrap gifts instead. For additional flare, use the comics section, or color on designs for a personal touch. Alternatively, use a gift sack to put gifts in each year. Shop Secondhand: This avoids any emissions or waste from the production of new items. There are some great consignment/thrift stores near us.
