FROM THE FOUNDERS: Why nonprofit news matters now more than ever

I have wanted to be a news reporter since I was a kid carrying a notebook around my neighborhood and on my school playground, jotting down interesting things people were doing and saying. Years later, journalism degree in hand, I launched into a career of reporting and producing in TV, radio and print newsrooms. I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many important stories to tell: the fall of the Soviet Union (yes, I’m that old), presidential elections, terror attacks, climate change, social justice movements…  Before co-founding the Marblehead Current, all my previous journalism jobs were with for-profit networks and companies, and while I never felt pressured to cover a story in a certain way, I knew not all the news we wrote was helping people or advancing ...

Meet Current intern Claire Tips

That 2022 Marblehead High School graduate Claire Tips wound up at Indiana University is unsurprising. Both of her parents went there, after all. Tips has worked as the Current's intern this summer, covering news stories and writing social media posts. But Tips did more than just become a Hoosier. She was one of 25 incoming students chosen for the school’s exclusive journalism honors program named for Ernie Pyle, the Indiana native whose reporting from the front lines of World War II earned him a Pulitzer Prize. Pyle was killed in action during the Battle of Okinawa on April 18, 1945. As an Ernie Pyle Scholar, Tips will spend part of her sophomore year at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, receiving training on media ethics and writing, among other topics. Next s...

New name. New look. Same great coverage.

No matter how we looked at it, it just fit. That’s the simplest way to explain how what you might have been getting to know as “Marblehead News” has become “Marblehead Current.” As seen in our new logo, “Current” is a nod to the ongoing importance the ocean has to our community. From Old Ironsides navigating into the shelter of Fort Sewall to the competitors who continue to do battle during Race Week or scoot up to Halifax every two years, to lobstering and Pleon Yacht Club lessons, important and fun things happen in the waters of our harbor. But we all also have come to depend on electrical “current” to supply power to many modern conveniences that border on necessities. Communities rely on “currents,”  too, and quality local journalism is one of the things that kee...

Help us choose a new name!

An independent dedicated group of local journalists and Marblehead citizens has spent the last several months working toward creating a new independent news source that is hyper-focused on Marblehead and built on a sustainable non-profit model governed by a local board of directors. With the help of a kind local attorney (thanks, David Moran!), we wound our way through the IRS thicket as well as the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office and established a bona fide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Marblehead News Group. We brainstormed and produced an initial batch of content you see on the website, primarily focused on preparing residents to cast informed votes in the June 21 election. The one thing we could not settle on? A permanent new name. On this, we humbly request yo...
