This story has been updated at 5:30 p.m.

The town has declared a snow emergency Tuesday 12 a.m.-7 a.m. due to a snowy nor’easter heading this way.

“It will be illegal to park any vehicle including boats and trailers on any public way during the snow emergency,” the town wrote in an email Monday evening. “Any vehicle, boat or trailer that is not off the public way between midnight tonight and 7 a.m. will be subject to being ticketed and towed. Depositing snow and ice, on or against a fire hydrant, or on any sidewalk or roadway is prohibited.”

The message continued: “If your vehicle is towed during a snow emergency, you should call the Marblehead Police Department at 781-631-1212 to confirm the location of your vehicle. All vehicles are towed to the designated town tow lot at the Transfer Station.”

Interim Superintendent Theresa McGuinness emailed families earlier in the day, closing schools on Tuesday. All morning and afternoon school activities are cancelled.

The National Weather Service has announced a winter storm warning for Essex County from Tuesday 1 a.m. through Wednesday 1 a.m. The nor’easter is now expected to dump several inches of snow  with winds as high as 60 miles per hour.

“The strong winds will also bring a threat for coastal flooding,” according to the NWS.  A coastal flood watch is in effect Tuesday noon-5 p.m. High tide on Tuesday is at 1:20 p.m. and Wednesday at 1:40 a.m.

“Lastly, closure of the Causeway is very likely during high tide, which is 1:44 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon based on the tidal surge,” the town wrote. “he duration of the closure generally lasts one hour before and one hour after high tide.”
