Marblehead track qualifiers shine on national stage

With their official high school season over, it was time for the Marblehead High indoor track national qualifiers to compete against the nation at The Track at New Balance complex in Allston March 9-12, technically running as the “Marblehead Track Club” rather than Magicians. Ryan Thompson qualified for both the 400 and 800 events in the Rising Stars category in the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Girls youth hockey quintet helps Wings win championship

Marblehead Youth Hockey (MYHA) players Parker Booth, Olivia Siden, Madi Reno, Emma Johnson and Addie Co-Peeps helped the U-12 North Shore Wings secure the Massachusetts State Hockey Championship in the U-12 Tier-IIS Division earlier this month. The Wings play out of Essex Sports Center in Middleton.  The Marblehead quintet also continues to play for the U-12 and U-14 MYHA Hollyhocks, and they have been teammates in the local league for years. Marblehead skiers show skill, class on way to second-place finishes

The Marblehead High boys and girls ski teams concluded another extraordinary season under the direction of head coach John Thompson, who just completed his 10th season at the helm. John’s wife, Sarah, was one of his assistants, along with Ned Clark, Will Thompson and Kyle Heffrin.  The girls team secured the top spot in the Mass. Bay Ski League East and ended up second to Mohawk Trail (5:13.54) in the state finals, which took place at Berkshire East on March 1. They finished with a time of 5:16.61.  The boys were also second against their state peers and were third in the league. But they were No. 1 in the sportsmanship department after discovering a timing error that originally saw them awarded the state title. St. John’s Prep of Danvers (5:02.91 1) was eventually crowned...

In Shelby McKie’s second season as gymnastics co-op coach, Marblehead High’s Magicians once again teamed with their Swampscott neighbors and this winter secured three wins, over Salem, Beverly and Peabody. Buzzer-beater in Round of 16 highlight of 15-win season

Despite missing two regulars — Devon Sanders (broken leg) and Trevor Foley (fractured foot) — the second-seeded Mansfield Hornets were able to regroup to beat visiting Marblehead (15-5, 10th seed), 77-50, in a Division 2 Round of 8 state tournament game on March 10. From the opening jump, the Hornets were all over the Magicians, leading comfortably at halftime, 39-20. While Eddie McCoy and J.T. Veiking led the home team in first half points with 14 apiece. Ryan Commoss was the top scorer for the visitors with six. In the second half, Isaiah Makor tried to ignite his teammates with a quick layup, but Nate Creedon and McCoy nailed consecutive threes to increase the advantage to 47-22. Father of MHS star Galante thanks town for acts of kindness

One year ago this week, the Marblehead community mourned the death of MHS Super Bowl champion James Galante, who lost his life in a single-car crash on March 18. On net, a good day: Pickleballers swing back into action at Seaside courts

Pickleballers were back playing on courts — with their own portable nets — at Seaside Park on March 8 and 9, the first days the courts have been open since mid-January. The Recreation and Parks Commission agreed to open the Seaside courts in good weather after two sometimes-heated meetings in February. All smiles on the courts: Pickleballers Randy Shefshick, Betty Lonergan, Lisa Spinale and James Slavet. Pickleballers take to the courts at Seaside on March 8. "I am so grateful to be able to play pickleball on a beautiful March day," said James Slavet. "Thank you to Marblehead Pickleball for providing access to such a fun and healthy activity that has been missing from my life lately." Indoor track Magicians hold own against best in state

Marblehead High indoor track qualifiers participated in the All-State Meet against their peers throughout the rest of the state on Feb. 25 at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury.  In the 600, Ryan Thompson finished seventh with a time of 1:24.12. “Great runners have their best races on the biggest stages, and that’s what Ryan did here at this year’s All-States,” said coach William Herlihy. “He got off to a perfect start, taking the lead at the end of the first lap, and never looked back. In doing so, he set a new school record by nearly a half of a second, while also running to a personal best, which is a tremendous jump at this level.” Thompson is now getting ready for the New Balance Indoor National Meet on March 10, where he will be running in the 400 and 800. ...
