Incumbent Marblehead Light Commissioner Walter Homan has picked up the forms and has until 5 p.m. Friday, July 1 to obtain the necessary signatures and return them to the town clerk’s office to request a recount formally.
According to unofficial results posted by the Marblehead Town Clerk’s Office, Homan fell 19 votes short of being re-elected to a three-year term on the commission in the June 21 annual town election, receiving 2,605 votes to challenger JeanJacques Yarmoff’s 2,624.
The election was affected by a town-wide ballot shortage, which continues to be investigated by the Election Division of the Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office.
Under the state’s procedure for requesting a recount, Homan must obtain at least 10 signatures from each precinct before the deadline. As of Monday morning, Homan had picked up the papers but not yet returned them, according to Town Clerk Robin Michaud.
Once they examine the recount petition and certify the registration of the signers, the
town’s registrars will set the recount time and place at a publicly posted open meeting, giving at least three days’ written notice of the recount to each candidate for Light Commission.
