Excerpts from the Marblehead police log Oct. 13-17. Consistent with state law, Marblehead Police have adopted a policy of not providing media outlets reports related to incidents involving domestic violence, juveniles and matters that remain under investigation.
Oct. 13
1:52 p.m. — Officer Dennis DeFelice spoke with a woman who stated her mother received a fraudulent call claiming the scammers could save her money on her cable bill. The scammers instructed her mother to mail a check to a post office box in Chicago to get the process started. The mother did not send any money or personal information.
7:22 p.m. — Officer Timothy Morley spoke to a woman who said she had received several fraudulent phone calls from an individual claiming to be from Chase Bank security. The alleged scammer told the woman there was suspected fraud on her Chase account. He obtained some of her personal information including her Social Security number, Chase account number and number of credit cards. The woman reported the incident to Chase Bank and police after realizing it was a scam call.
Oct. 14
7:22 p.m. — Officer Michael Farewell responded to a store on Atlantic Avenue after the owner reported a suspicious male coming to the business the past two evenings around closing time. The owner stated a male in his 20s with a black backpack came to the store at 7:30 p.m. as they were closing up. While the male had not made any threats, the owner felt his intentions were not good and he may be casing the store. Farewell advised the owner to call police if the male returns and makes staff feel unsafe.
Oct. 15
1:29 a.m. — Officer Luc Marcus met with a man outside his apartment building on Pleasant Street who reported his red moped was stolen from a restaurant parking lot on Pleasant Street around 11:45 p.m. the night prior. The owner used a phone app to track the moped to a location in Salem. Salem police recovered the vehicle and arranged for it to be towed.
11:35 a.m. — Officer Andrew Clark responded to the Eastern Yacht Club on Foster Street for a report of a hit-and-run accident. A witness reported hearing a loud crash around 10:45 p.m. the prior night and seeing two parked boats pushed out of position. A dark colored Mercedes sedan then quickly left the parking lot. The witness obtained the vehicle’s license plate number which traced back to a local resident. However, the Mercedes showed no damage when located and the owner denied any involvement. Surveillance footage will be reviewed for further information.
Oct. 16
9:37 a.m. — Officer Nicholas Michaud was dispatched to the Abbot Public Library on Brook Road after employees arrived to open the building and discovered a broken window pane in the reference room. The library director showed Michaud the damaged window, which had shattered glass on the sill and floor. Based on his training and experience, Michaud determined the window was likely broken by a ball sometime overnight. There were no witnesses to the incident. The facilities department was notified to arrange repairs.
12:36 p.m. — Officer Nicholas Michaud responded to the parking lot at Riverhead Beach for a dispute call. A woman reported that while sitting in her parked car, a loose black dog with a white paw allegedly jumped up and put its paws on both the driver’s side and passenger side of her vehicle. The woman located the dog’s owner down at the beach and advised him of the incident, but he denied that his dog had left the beach area. The woman provided the license plate of the dog owner’s car to police. Michaud followed up by speaking to both the dog owner and his mother, who was also present. The dog owner reiterated that he did not believe his dog was responsible for the damage. Michaud advised the complaining woman of her options for following up on the incident.
