Marblehead Select Board has accepted the Rotary Club of Marblehead’s gift of a community clock just before the civic organization’s centennial anniversary in April of 2023.
The gift, in part, is to “commemorate our connection to our beautiful town.”
“The Rotary Club of Marblehead has done much over the years to support our town, its residents and, most importantly, our Marblehead youth,” writes the club’s co-president, Nancy Archer Gwin, in a letter to the Select Board. “We hope you will consider this gift as an asset to our magnificent Marblehead.”
The Rotary Club pitched “a 10-and-a-half-foot, two-dial Howard clock (or similar model) that would include a plaque from the Rotary Club.”
Gwin told the Select Board clock brand is constructed by Electric Time Street Clocks, a Bay State-based company that has made clocks
since 1918.
“They made the street clocks at Disney World,” Gwin pointed out.
The next question: Where to put it?
“If we may be so bold,” Gwin writes, “we would like to suggest potential locations for the clock.”
Her letter puts forward the following locations:
- The Five Corners intersection island
- Next to Marblehead Chamber of Commerce information booth
- The Memorial Park across from National Grand Bank
She also provided the following pertinent information:
- A concrete foundation required
- Electrical setup requires 115 volt, 20 amp circuit (annual electric bill is approx $50 per year)
- No regular maintenance is required
- Clock will self-correct the time due to power outage or daylight savings
A quick Google search reveled Rotary Clubs across the nation donate community clocks, especially commemorating their centennial anniversaries.
Great looking clock! I think it would be about perfect next to the Chamber of Commerce Info Booth. Thanks Rotary!
