Help us choose a new name!

An independent dedicated group of local journalists and Marblehead citizens has spent the last several months working toward creating a new independent news source that is hyper-focused on Marblehead and built on a sustainable non-profit model governed by a local board of directors.

With the help of a kind local attorney (thanks, David Moran!), we wound our way through the IRS thicket as well as the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office and established a bona fide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Marblehead News Group.

We brainstormed and produced an initial batch of content you see on the website, primarily focused on preparing residents to cast informed votes in the June 21 election.

The one thing we could not settle on? A permanent new name. On this, we humbly request your help.

The group invites everyone who lives or works in Marblehead to submit suggestions for what we should call this new news source (which, yes, we hope and expect will eventually include a print edition!).

Your only restriction? The proposed name must include “Marblehead.”

Ideas should be submitted to info@marbleheadnews.org with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your traditional street address
  • Relationship to Marblehead (resident, Marblehead Public School student, employee working in Marblehead, etc.)
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number

Marblehead News Group will select a group of finalists. We will then conduct a vote to help pick the winner. Those voting online will be required to supply an email address and phone number, and votes will be subject to verification. We also hope to work with local businesses to place ballot boxes around town.

To be considered, suggestions must be submitted to info@marbleheadnews.org by Sunday, June 26, at midnight. The finalists will be announced online shortly thereafter, with voting concluding by July 10.

Once the finalists are announced, you are encouraged to lobby for your favorite choice by sending a letter to the editor at info@marbleheadnews.org, and we will share your thoughts as they arrive on our website.

The name of the person who suggested the winning entry will be celebrated online and in print in a manner to be determined.

All entries will become the sole property of Marblehead News Group.

The group also reserves the right to modify and / or combine entries.

In the case of a tie or the use of more than one entry, the group will acknowledge credit based on the first person to offer the suggestions as determined by the time-stamp on the email.

In the spirit of creating a genuine community news source with community engagement, we thank you for your ideas and suggestions. Greatly looking forward to hearing from you!
