LETTER: Select Board’s brewery vote disappointing

LETTER: Select Board’s brewery vote disappointing

To the editor:  Did you know between 2010 and 2021 there was over a 500% increase in small-scale, craft breweries? New England is home to more than 600 craft breweries, the Commonwealth accounting for just over 200 including brewpubs, farm breweries and manufacturers. The North Shore touts well over 20 breweries — Salem with two and Beverly with five, but Marblehead zero.   Since moving to Marblehead in August of 2020, my family and I have made it a point to explore the area. We’re constantly…

LETTER: Voting for Schaeffner and YES on 1!

To the editor: I have had the distinct honor of working with Jenn Schaeffner to advocate for our schools. Jenn is always honest, does her due diligence, asks questions, and never makes excuses. While there have been topics I have debated with Jenn, I have always felt she listens to my point of view, is respectful in stating hers and has the professionalism to not bring prejudice from previous topic discussions into what we are currently debating. Jenn doesn’t assign value to a thought or…

LETTER: Becker has ‘a known track record of civility’

Dr. David Becker, with his 18 years of experience on the Board of Health, has a known track record of civility, being able to work with others collaboratively, and making good decisions for the benefit of the Town.  As we all know, especially from our experience of the past few years, Public Health Emergencies can occur at the blink of an eye. We need someone on the Board of Health who has health and public health experience, to be able to make tough, educated decisions…

LETTER: Support Sarah Gold for School Committee

In a post-pandemic world where mental and behavioral health are at the forefront of complex issues our students face today, the School Committee candidate who is committed and qualified to address this crisis is Sarah Gold. Sarah understands that if our students are not well physically, mentally, or behaviorally, they will not have the same chance at succeeding academically. As a licensed mental health counselor and school counselor who works with children daily, Sarah knows the direct impact that mental health and well being has…

LETTER: Return Erin Noonan, Alexa Singer to Select Board

To the editor: Here are some reasons why I am voting for Erin Noonan and Alexa Singer to return them to the Select Board:  they are really engaged in strategic planning about the vital issues that we all, but especially our elected leaders, need to attend to . Among those issues are the following: The fiscal well-being of the town so that we thrive, not just get by, in our schools. Affordable housing for our teachers and town employees and returning graduates. Attractive business policies…

LETTER: Shop local, and vote local

LETTER: Shop local, and vote local

With over 20 years of Marblehead elections experience, I remain puzzled that so few vote in town elections. As a poll worker and registrar for many years, I noticed over 80% turnout for presidential elections and 60+ % for gubernatorial elections, but town participation has run from a low of 10% to a high of 40% over these past 20 years. Town elections have consequences that directly affect our daily lives in significant ways. A low turnout may present elected officials with a false impression…

LETTER: Lisa Wolf for Light Commission

LETTER: Lisa Wolf for Light Commission

To the editor: I have known Lisa Wolf for more than 40 years, since our days together at Marblehead High School and as instructors in the Children’s Island sailing program. Several years ago, my husband and I moved back to Marblehead at about the same time as Lisa and her husband, Steve. Both families are committed to thinking globally and acting locally in the fight to protect our planet. I watched, impressed, as Lisa and Steve overcame numerous hurdles to build their zero-energy home in…

LETTER: Return Smith, Wolf to Light Commission

LETTER: Return Smith, Wolf to Light Commission

To the editor: Marblehead is fortunate to have two strong candidates for Marblehead Light Commission on June 20 — Adam Smith and Lisa Wolf. Both currently serve on the board and are working hard to modernize our aging electricity infrastructure while at the same time making sure we keep rates low, keep the lights on, and help the town meet its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Lisa Wolf is the current vice chair of the Light Commission and is seeking re-election to a…

LETTER: Take a closer look at traffic enforcement

LETTER: Take a closer look at traffic enforcement

Last month, the Marblehead Police Department deployed electronic signs alerting drivers that April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month. What the MPD did not do was enforce the laws enacted to deter distracted driving. Only two citations were issued for violations of the state’s “hands free” law, according to the police log, with two more stops ending in “verbal warnings.” What’s more, of the 73 citations issued during the month, 40 were issued over the course of just three days, 21 of those on a single…
