A small crowd of students, families and educators gathered outside Veterans Middle School Friday afternoon to dedicate a bench in memory of Savanah Gatchell, the 13-year-old killed in an alleged drunk-driving crash last August.
Gatchell’s mother, Christine, and sister, Alysa Otero, snapped photos of the bench and embraced friends and family members. The bench was adorned with a pink ribbon and some of Savanah’s schoolwork.
“I appreciate all your support,” Christine Gatchell said, fighting back tears. “It keeps Savanah close to us. She’s here in spirit. I can feel her.”
Veterans educator Elloree Jennings, who knew Savanah, led the effort to install the memorial bench.
“We’ve come together to dedicate this bench in loving memory of Savanah, whose life ended far too soon,” Jennings said. “While our hearts still carry the sadness of that loss, today is about love, remembrance and the impact that she had on the people around her.”
Jennings thanked those in attendance for helping keep Savanah’s memory alive.
“Your presence means more than words can express,” she said. “It reminds us that Savanah is remembered not only for the tragedy of her passing but for the joy she brought, the lives she touched and the love that continues to surround her. We hope this bench becomes a place of reflection, of comfort — a place where her friends can sit, remember her beautiful spirit, her beautiful face, and be reminded to cherish the moments we have with those around us. Thank you for honoring Savanah with us today.”
The bench is located under a tree outside the school’s Performing Arts Center.
Marblehead teenager Oscar Galante has been indicted as a youthful offender in connection with the crash and is awaiting trial.
