Lessons in journalism — and community — in Marblehead

My name is Saoirse Stallings, and I am a senior at Endicott College studying communications and digital journalism. For my senior internship, I spent the past few months working at the Marblehead Current. Gaining hands-on experience in such an engaged, historic town was the best experience I could have asked for.  Current Editor Leigh Blander and Endicott College intern Saoirse Stallings speak to professors and students at a December event. COURTESY PHOTO With each assignment, I explored a new piece of the community. From pie…

EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY: Let’s play patience BINGO again!

As I write this, I can count 16 lit candles in my immediate environs. Extreme? So is the afternoon blanket of darkness which threatens to swallow my positive outlook whole starting at around 4 p.m. Such are the contradictions of this season of lights. My son recently commented about his affection for the month of December noting how much nicer people are than usual. He lives in the city, and knowing his habits, I’m glad to hear Chipotle servers and Uber drivers are putting their…

FOOD 101: Chocolate holiday dessert — still in the making

Childhood memories are often chocolate-coated. My brother and I would save up our change to buy candy at the corner store on the walk home from school. He would choose a Milky Way; I would get a dark chocolate Mounds bar. He liked his chocolate light and sweet. I liked mine with a dark jolt. As I explored chocolate’s intensely deep flavor, a friend’s mom added a splash of coffee to hot cocoa drinks, sending me further along this direction. I sampled everything that came…

EDITORIAL: Say it to my face

Cooler heads seem to be prevailing as town leaders resume following through on their pledge to minimize the harm caused by youth substance use in response to the town’s most recent tragedy, the crash that cost 13-year-old Savanah Gatchell her life. For that, we are grateful — the topic is too important to let the conversation get derailed by personality conflicts or breaches of protocol. But before we turn the page, it is worth reviewing the conflict involving Board of Health member Tom McMahon, Police…

Santas ashore! Christmas Walk activities draw crowds

More than 20 Santas paddle boarded from Pleon Yacht Club to Riverside Beach and then State Street Landing Sunday morning. The annual tradition raises money for the Marblehead Food Pantry. This year, a polar bear and even the Grinch joined in. On Saturday, about 300 people packed State Street Landing to welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus as they arrived by lobster boat. The North Pole couple was greeted by cheers and a live performance of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by the Marblehead High…
