Lessons in journalism — and community — in Marblehead

My name is Saoirse Stallings, and I am a senior at Endicott College studying communications and digital journalism. For my senior internship, I spent the past few months working at the Marblehead Current. Gaining hands-on experience in such an engaged, historic town was the best experience I could have asked for.

With each assignment, I explored a new piece of the community. From pie sales supporting local nonprofits and book previews by local authors to historical building plans and — so many — town meetings, I experienced firsthand what makes Marblehead so special. It was an honor to meet so many of you and to help share your stories.

These moments also showed me the dedication it takes to run an independent, nonprofit newspaper and how this paper supports and serves the town in countless ways — whether letting people know where to hear great music, join a 5K, run for office or take part in community events. Small-town newspapers have an outsized impact on local life, community building and civic engagement.

Working and learning alongside Leigh Blander gave me a full picture of how to report local happenings in the most meaningful way for the public. Through countless AP style edits and fast-moving deadlines, she guided me with patience and generosity every step of the way.

One of my favorite memories was covering the Christmas Walk. Seeing so many people come out to celebrate the holidays and support one another was heartwarming. I even had a moment with Santa and Mrs. Claus after they arrived by lobster boat — just in time to get my Christmas wishes in.

The Marblehead Current is where I earned my first consistent bylines. As I move forward in my education and career, the lessons I learned here will stay with me.

Thank you to Marblehead, to every resident who shared a story with me, and to the Marblehead Current.
