A few dozen Marbleheaders are gearing up for the Pan-Mass Challenge, which starts Saturday and runs through the weekend.
The PMC is a bike-a-thon that raises more money for charity than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. Always held the first weekend in August, the PMC raises funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Each summer, thousands of riders and volunteers from 43 states and 12 countries participate in the PMC, all with a common goal: to find a cure for cancer.
One hundred percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $1.125 billion for Dana-Farber.
Riders can choose different starting points. The finish line is at Pilgrim’s Landing Park in Provincetown.
Angus McQuilken of Marblehead will be back on the starting line tomorrow.
“The PMC has been part of my life for 18 years, since my diagnosis with colon cancer at age 36,” McQuilken told the Current. “I ride with Team Kermit, and they are like family to me. The PMC has always been my way of giving back to Dana-Farber, in appreciation of the world-class care that I received there.”
McQuilken has raised more than $118,000 over his 17 rides. He hopes to raise another $12,000 this year. Learn more about his story at
