LETTER: Beep…beep…beep

To the editor:

As I write this letter, I have spent the last four hours listening to the relentless beep…beep…beep of a backup alarm echoing through my neighborhood.

My neighbors are replacing their driveway, and one consequence of that construction is that everyone within earshot has been subjected to hours of continuous backup beeper noise for multiple days. Unfortunately, this is hardly an isolated incident. Whether it’s road crews, landscapers, utility trucks or construction equipment, backup alarms have become an almost constant soundtrack of summer.

Summer in New England is short. We treasure the opportunity to open our windows, sit on our porches and enjoy our yards. Yet that simple pleasure is increasingly drowned out by noise that is not merely loud — it is repetitive, intrusive and impossible to ignore.

Marblehead demonstrated that quality of life matters when residents came together to enact a seasonal leaf blower ban. The improvement has been remarkable. We recognized that excessive noise affects the well-being of an entire community, and we acted accordingly.

Perhaps it is time to have a similar conversation about backup alarm beepers.

No one disputes that protecting workers and pedestrians is important. Backup alarms exist for a reason. But safety should not exempt us from asking whether there are better ways to achieve the same goal. Modern technology now offers quieter alternatives, including directional “white noise” alarms, cameras and proximity detection systems that maintain safety while dramatically reducing the impact on surrounding neighborhoods.

Every public policy involves balancing competing interests. At some point, we must ask whether the cumulative impact of thousands of hours of unnecessary noise is itself a public health and quality-of-life issue.

Marblehead has shown that it is willing to have thoughtful conversations about noise pollution. The relentless chorus of backup beepers deserves to be part of that conversation.
