Marblehead voters overwhelmingly back Koh for Congress; reject housing ballot question

Marblehead voters gave strong support to Democrat Dan Koh of Andover on Tuesday, backing his bid to succeed U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, who chose not to seek a seventh term representing the 6th Congressional District.

Koh beat Micah Jones in Marblehead, 6,940 to 3,954. Koh won the 6th District with 64% of the vote.

“Tonight, we will win back the House,” Koh told supporters in Peabody. “But we will have failed if we go back to the status quo. It’s time to help people as much as Donald Trump has hurt people. It won’t be just enough to unrig the system. It’s time we rig the system for working people.”

Marblehead voters overwhelmingly favored Democratic Gov. Maura Healey (6,909 votes vs. 3,531 for Mike Minogue) in her bid for a second term and U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (6,964 votes vs 3,154 for John Deaton).

Early voting draws strong turnout

Marblehead voters headed into Election Day having already cast thousands of ballots.

Nearly 31% of the town’s 17,084 registered voters cast their ballots early, either by mail or in person, according to figures from the Secretary of State’s Office.

Mail-in ballots totaled 3,395 and early, in-person ballots totaled 1,888, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Voters weigh in on 10 ballot questions

Marblehead voters also faced an unusually long list of ballot questions — nine statewide measures and one local advisory question.

A new chapter in the 6th District

The congressional race marked a changing of the guard in the district, which Moulton has represented since 2015.

Moulton opted against seeking a seventh term in Congress and instead challenged Markey for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. Markey defeated Moulton in September, although Marblehead voters favored their hometown congressman by a substantial margin.

In that primary, Moulton received 2,894 votes in Marblehead, compared with 1,896 for Markey.

Koh emerged from a crowded Democratic congressional primary to face Jones in Tuesday’s general election.

The election results are still unofficial and will be certified in coming days/weeks.
