A town in mourning: More than 1,000 honor Owen Coyne

More than 1,000 people gathered Oct. 8 to say a final goodbye to Owen Coyne, the beloved 17-year-old Marblehead High School senior and star athlete who died Oct. 1 after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Mourners filled Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, while hundreds more stood outside on the lawn, watching the funeral service on a television screen.

Owen Coyne died Oct. 1.

Coyne’s coaches, Mike Giardi and Nolan Raimo, delivered tributes, as did his friend Max Kane. The Marblehead High School chorus performed several songs, including “Photograph,” “Fix You” and “See You Again.”

Across Atlantic Avenue, the American flag flew at half-staff, and a large Magicians banner hung from the bleachers at Seaside Park — tributes to a young man whose loss has touched the entire community.
