After dropping two straight games, the Marblehead High School boys soccer team (7-2) bounced back nicely last week with two shutout wins over Salem (5-0, Sept. 28) and Danvers (7-0, Sept. 30). These Magicians also had a couple of more shutout wins, both on the road, earlier this week against Gloucester (2-0, Oct. 5) and Masco (1-0, Oct. 7).

“Neither the Witches’ spells nor the Nor’easter were strong enough to stop the Magicians at Piper Field,” said coach Elmer Magana afterwards.
Outside back Judah Spell opened up the scoring with a 30-yard rocket that found the top right corner of the net. Quinn Cohane added two more to the winning cause, while Julien Poitevin and David Magen scored one each.
Goalie Andrew Halvorson recorded his third shutout of the year, and added another one against the Falcons.
“Our defense was solid, while our midfielders dominated the flow of the (Salem) game,” said Magana. “Center back Noah Smerka played a masterful game, and overall, I was extremely proud of how our boys performed throughout it, regardless of the sideway rain that hit us every second (on the pitch).”
Two days later, it was off to Danvers to take on the host Falcons.
Center midfielder Charlie Phenix got the offense going on a header via a corner kick by Cohane. Magen accounted for one assisted by Poitevin. Center midfielder Jackson Nutt scored two. Mark Vinokur, another center midfielder and center back Mitchell Goldwater each netted one. Goldwater’s marker was on a 30-yard rocket shot. Lastly, freshman Philip Druker was credited with his first varsity goal.
“It was a masterful performance by our defense and strikers,” said Magana, “and specifically center back Jay Diggins played a solid game.”
Assistant coach Tom Roundy added his thoughts on this game. “We did what we needed to do, score the first goal and not allow any goals against.”
