Marblehead Community Charter Public School students made gains in math and science on the spring 2026 MCAS exams, including a 14-percentage-point jump in science, while English scores dipped slightly from a year ago.
Overall, 51% of Charter students met or exceeded expectations in math, up from 48% in 2025, according to results released by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In science, the share climbed from 38% to 52%.
English language arts moved in the opposite direction, with 50% of students meeting or exceeding expectations, down from 53% last year.
Charter students nevertheless outperformed statewide averages in all three subjects. Statewide, 41% of students met or exceeded expectations in math and science and 40% did so in English.
Some of the biggest year-over-year gains came in fifth grade.
In math, 56% of fifth graders met or exceeded expectations, up from 30% last year — a 26-point increase. Fifth-grade science climbed from 32% to 53%, while English rose from 32% to 44%.
Eighth graders also posted strong results. Sixty-three percent met or exceeded expectations in math, up from 46% last year and compared with 42% statewide.
In eighth-grade English, 63% met or exceeded expectations, compared with 42% statewide. On the civics assessment, 60% met or exceeded expectations, up from 50% last year and compared with 40% statewide.
The results were more mixed in other grades.
Seventh-grade math saw the largest decline, falling from 69% meeting or exceeding expectations in 2025 to 41% this year. Seventh-grade English dropped from 64% to 48%.
Fourth-grade results also declined. Forty-eight percent met or exceeded expectations in both English and math this year, down from 55% in English and 61% in math last year.
Year-to-year comparisons by grade come with a caveat: The students tested in a particular grade this spring are not the same students who took that grade-level test a year ago. As a result, the changes do not necessarily show whether individual students improved or lost ground.
