Marblehead marks America’s 250th with Revolutionary spirit

This Fourth of July, Marblehead will celebrate more than the nation’s birthday.

As communities across the country commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, Marblehead’s REV250 Committee is inviting residents and visitors to honor the town’s Revolutionary roots through a series of events that stretch well beyond Independence Day.

The committee has spent months organizing programs that began in April and will continue throughout the year, highlighting Marblehead’s role in the nation’s founding.

Saturday’s signature events will feature live readings of the Declaration of Independence.

— 11:30 a.m.: Abbot Hall, with Select Board members
— 11:45 a.m.: St Michael’s Church
— Noon: Fort Sewall, Glover’s Regiment will be there and fire the cannon

Residents can also explore two museum exhibits that examine Marblehead’s Revolutionary-era history from different perspectives.

At the Marblehead Museum, 170 Washington St., visitors can view “Declarations of Independence: Marblehead’s Revolutionary War Experience.” At the museum’s new Brick Kitchen, 157 Washington St., check out “Resistance & Resilience: Slavery and Freedom in Marblehead.”

The celebration continues later this month. On July 18, Glover’s Marblehead Regiment will stage its annual encampment at Fort Sewall, offering a glimpse into life in colonial Marblehead.
