Emergency cooling center welcoming residents during heatwave/power outage

Only a handful of people were keeping cool Thursday evening inside the Brown School cafeteria, which is a makeshift emergency cooling center during the heatwave and power outage. The center is filled with cots and chairs. Bottled water is available.

A mom and her two young daughters — one of whom was using a medical device — were there, along with an 85-year-old man and his grown sons.

Fire Chief Jason Gilliland set up the cooling center yesterday. It is coming in handy Thursday afternoon, when a power outage hit much of Marblehead.

About 1,000 customers remain without power, according to the Marblehead Municipal Light Department. Power may be restored to roughly half soon, while it could take eight hours or more to bring everyone back online.

Here’s a map of the impacted areas. Stay with the Current for updates.
