On May 19, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association hosted the annual celebration of National Women and Girls in Sports Day at Faneuil Hall in Boston. This event recognizes two exceptional female athletes from each high school in the state. It’s designed to honor their contributions to their respective sports, commitment to sportsmanship and excellence in leadership.
These athletes throughout the state are nominated by their schools to represent them at the daylong experience, and this year Marblehead High School was proud to send Arianna Leahy (gymnastics) and Emilia Russo (hockey) there.
According to girls soccer coach Lisa Wales, they both exemplify integrity, sportsmanship, kindness and commitment to high school sports, all qualities that make Magicians shine.
Both athletes were accompanied by new MHS assistant athletic director Christine Silva and the school’s gymnastics coach Samantha Klipper. For Silva, it was a full circle moment after being chosen to represent Stoneham High School at the National Women and Girls in Sports Day back in 2009.
