Winners of their last 11 out of 12 games, Marblehead laxmen wrap up NEC title

The Marblehead High boys lacrosse team (12-3) has rattled off four straight wins, and in so doing has clinched the Northeastern Conference championship. In fact, these Magicians have been practically flawless throughout the past several weeks, winning 11 out of their last 12 games. It’s a formula that they want to maintain with the postseason right around the corner. 

According to the latest Division 2 power rankings, the Marblehead boys are seeded 22nd with still three regular season games left on the schedule against Melrose (May 18), host Winthrop (May 20, 4:30 p.m.) and non-league Wakefield at home (May 21, 7 p.m.). 

The Magicians have recently conquered Gloucester (15-3, May 7), Lexington (9-6, May 9), Peabody (13-3, May 11) and Masco (16-7, May 13). 

“We are a young group with only nine seniors on the varsity roster,” said coach John Wilkens. 

In the game against the Minutemen at home, they were actually trailing, 5-3 at halftime. “We had a strong defensive effort in the second half to get back in this game,” said Wilkens. 

Tyler Forbes was the leader on offense with four goals and one assist. Kyle Thibodeau had the hat trick. Owen Dulac went one and two. Bailey Finkle accounted for one score. Will Kinahan, Landon Dosch and Reid Wysor each chipped in with one assist. Goalie Colin Maniaci came up with five critical saves to help his teammates maintain the lead in a low scoring game. 

Against Gloucester also at Piper, Kinahan (1 assist), Forbes (4 assists) and Dosch paced the offensive attack with four goals apiece. Thibodeau was credited with one goal and two assists. Sophomores John Rand and Noah Pignato each chipped in with one score. Dulac set up two markers. Henry Wolcott assisted on one tally, along with freshman Zach Thibodeau. Maniaci only had to make three stops.
