LETTER: Sure, things change; but we need to fund our town

To the editor:

Enough with not funding our town. And please don’t start complaining about how “things have changed.” Sure, if you’ve been around long enough things DO change! Need gas? Can’t count on Phil’s Mobil anymore. (Not that Phil would EVER charge us over $4 for gas.) Need a newspaper? Oh…Howard’s is gone. Asprin? No going to Eaton’s.

What hasn’t changed is our beautiful harbor and the proud history of this town that we hold so dear. And the community of people we live and share that responsibility with.

We are in this together, through all of life’s cycles. We should be proud of the infrastructure that takes care of us: schools, police department, fire department, parks, cemeteries, waterfront, sanitation, to mention just a few. If you have been around long enough you remember the townsfolk stepping up to the plate to provide us with these things in the past. It seems a shame that young people in this town need to form a separate committee to “persuade” the population that we should have a town library. Good schools. Trash collection. These are basic elements of a healthy community. Not a wealthy community. A normal, respectable community. Let’s take care of Marblehead, and get back on track. And take care of all of our history that is yet to come.
