MHS teacher lacing up for Boston Marathon

A Marblehead High School teacher will take on the Boston Marathon this Monday, running to support cancer research inspired by her family’s experience and her own medical care.

Caylan Kenney, who lives in Lynn, is running to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“One of my sisters was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32,” Kenney told the Current. “She was living in Colorado at the time but didn’t think twice about coming back to Boston to get treatment at Dana-Farber. Thanks to their incredible team, she remains cancer-free almost 15 years later. Due to a known genetic mutation that puts me at higher risk for certain types of cancer, I’ve also been followed at Dana-Farber for over 10 years. Every time I visit, I’m impressed by the kindness and professionalism shown by every staff member.”

Kenney said she got the idea to run during a doctor’s appointment last year.

“I was invited to participate in a clinical trial involving the use of tamoxifen in the prevention of breast cancer,” she said. “During one of my visits I had an interesting conversation with my doctor about how federal funding cuts were impacting cancer research. I left that appointment feeling like I needed to do something to help and decided I would apply for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. This will be my second marathon but first Boston and first time running for a cause.”

Kenney teaches health at MHS and also works part-time at Creature Comforts/Pawsitively Marblehead.
