The Marblehead Current and The Mariner are partnering to offer a prestigious $2,000 scholarship created in memory of Frances “Fraffie” Welch and Ed Bell, both of whom had significant careers in journalism and contributed greatly to the Marblehead community. Applications are being accepted now through April 9 HERE.
Welch, a graduate of Marblehead High School, spent over 30 years serving as a journalist and committed herself to her community. Bell had a distinguished 50-year career, excelling in newspapers, broadcasting and wire service. He co-founded and was co-chair of the Marblehead News Group, Inc. which publishes the Marblehead Current. He retired as chief of bureau for the Associated Press in Boston
This scholarship honors their legacies and is intended for a graduating MHS senior who plans to pursue a career in journalism or political science. To qualify, applicants must have a 3.5 GPA and be attending a college or university in the fall. It offers a chance for future students to follow in the footsteps of these two exceptional individuals in the fields of journalism and politics.
