Coach Paul Moran’s girls basketball team went into the holiday break looking good and loving life after extending its winning streak to four games with home triumphs over non-league Revere (49-22, Dec. 22) and Shawsheen Tech (41-28, Dec. 23). On the season, these Magicians are 4-1 overall. They are 2-1 in the Northeastern Conference.
The Marblehead girls dominated the Greater Boston League Patriots throughout, leading at halftime, 26-10.
For the record, Tessa Andriano was the team’s leading scorer in this game with 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Greta Sachs accounted for 10 points. Carys Moran and Ainsley McDonald were next in line with seven apiece. Nora Mahan chipped in with four. Hailey Schmitt, Lucy McDonald and Eliza Bland tallied two each.
“We played well against probably the best team in the GBL this year. They are outstanding in all phases of the game,” said Moran. “For us, Ainsley McDonald played her best game of the year so far.”
It was more of the same the very next night against the Rams. The home team jumped all over them early to lead at halftime, 23-12.
Moran was particularly impressed with his younger players that included Maia Fiore, Anna Cannuscio (2 points) and Bland (2 points). He also singled out Lucy McDonald (2 points) and Ainsley McDonald, no relation, for their solid play.
But it was Andriano, who once again paced the offensive attack with 20 points. Sachs was credited with eight. Schmitt was close behind with seven.
Sammy Walker is an example of this year’s team approach, as she did her job exceptionally well on the defensive side of the court in both these games, according to Moran.
“We have been hustling all over the court, getting in the passing lanes to disrupt opposing offenses, while making great passes ourselves, when it was our turn to go on the attack,” Moran added.
