Dexter Holbrook (Jake) Koopman, age 88, of Marblehead passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023.
Dexter was born July 3, 1935, in Boston and grew up in Weymouth where he graduated from Weymouth High School in 1953 and graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1957. Dexter served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant junior grade. Dexter moved to Marblehead in 1972. He had a long career with General Electric culminating with managing the Northeast Marine Business.

Dexter loved music and played the trombone in the local Civil Disturbance Jazz Band. Dexter was an accomplished sailor, sailing out of Wessagusset Yacht Club in North Weymouth and later out of the Corinthian Yacht Club. He dearly loved his sailboat, Liberty, and cruised the coast of Maine many times with friends from the Corinthian Yacht Club.
Dexter took pride in his grandchildren and attended many of their activities and sporting events. In his later years, Dexter enjoyed meeting with his coffee group friends in Marblehead.
Dexter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marcia Hannafin Koopman, of Marblehead; his sons David (Michelle) Koopman of York, Maine; Douglas (Jo-Mary) Koopman of Marblehead; and Jon Koopman of Marblehead. Dexter is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Greta (Mike) Buzzell (great grand-children Caroline and Bryce), Peter (Alice) Koopman, Jared Koopman, Benjamin (Cecily) Koopman, Thomas Koopman, Kyle Koopman, Matthew Koopman, Natalie Koopman and Hannah Koopman.
Funeral services will be held for Dexter on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead, MA 01945.
