Five juveniles charged in antisemitic, homophobic graffiti at schools

The Marblehead Current has learned that several juveniles have been charged in connection with antisemitic and homophobic graffiti at the Village and old Coffin schools on two different dates in March.

Vandals hit the Village School (above) and the old Coffin School in March with antisemitic and homophobic graffiti.

“There were two juveniles involved at the Village School and three at the Coffin. The charges were all property crimes,” Police Chief Dennis King told the Current on July 11. The juveniles were summonsed to court in May.

King declined to answer more questions, saying, “Juvenile court proceedings are closed to the public, as are the reports (absent a couple exceptions, or judge’s order).”

Village School Principal Mandy Murphy wrote to parents about the incident at her school in March. “It is with great disappointment and frustration that I write to you concerning recent graffiti found on the roof and bricks of Village School.  We reach out to you to inform you and let you know we take these hate crimes very seriously.”

Reacting to news of the charges, Marblehead Task Force Against Discrimination co-chair Helaine Hazlett said, “I am pleased that the case is solved and the perpetrators have been charged.”
