UPDATE: Moulton’s Salem office receives envelope with mystery powder

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton’s Salem office is among the targets of a nationwide wave of suspicious mailings containing unknown powdery substances sent to election offices and congressional offices across the country. Moulton is a Marblehead native.

The FBI and Salem Police responded to Moulton’s Front Street office in Salem today, according to his Chief of Staff Neesha Suarez, who shared a photo of the suspicious envelope with the Current.

At 1:30 p.m., Suarez updated the Current.

“SPD officers and FBI agents came to the Salem District Office to investigate the letter. During their examination of the letter, law enforcement discovered a white, powdery substance inside. Subsequent testing did not identify any substances of concern.”

Salem PD put out this statement on social media: “The parcel, which contained an unknown powdery substance, was secured and safely removed from the building by law enforcement. The substance is currently being analyzed at the State Crime Lab.”

Nationally, the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings, which have prompted law enforcement responses in multiple states.

The incidents come less than three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Moulton opted not to run for the House this year, and instead launched a failed bid to unseat Sen. Ed Markey.
