The Marblehead High School boys cross-country team defeated Danvers going away, 19-39 at Gatchell Park on Oct. 12. They finished the regular season with a perfect 5-0 record to secure the Northeastern Conference Dunn Division title.
The Magicians were led by a first-place finish from senior captain Harrison Kee (16:50). He was followed by Isaac Gross (second, 17:04), Will Cerrutti (third, 17:06) and Ryan Thompson (fifth, 17:33). Ryan Blestowe (eighth, 18:21) and David DiCostanzo (ninth, 18:25) rounded out the Top 10 harriers in this meet.
The Marblehead varsity boys were set to travel to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds this past weekend to compete in the Glennon Twilight Invitational as a warmup to the state postseason meets.
Last Thursday, Oct. 6, the Marblehead boys defeated Peabody at Gatchell Park, 24-31.
Logan Tracia of Peabody won the meet in a course-record time of 16:45. But Kee (16:46) was right behind him in second place, which was also a new Marblehead record.
Will Cerrutti (third, 17:04), Isaac Gross (fourth, 17:14) and Ryan Thompson (fifth, 17:32) sealed the deal on another Marblehead victory.
Girls breeze by Danvers
The Marblehead High School girls’ cross-country team took care of visiting Danvers on Oct. 12, 24-35.
The Falcons recorded second, third, seventh, 11th and 12th place finishes, while freshman Marri O’Connell (20:17) sped by all competitors to come out on top.
Junior Cat Piper (fourth, 23:04), senior captain Maya Mahoney (fifth, 24:49), senior Piper Morgan (sixth, 24:50) and senior captain Isabelle Harvey (eighth, 25:02) rounded out the team’s top five scorers.
Freshman Angie Fischer (ninth, 25:12) and senior Devin Whalen (10th, 25:15) were also able to finish among the Top 10 runners.
Golfers secure win No. 10
The Marblehead golfers (10-3) just keep on winning after shutting down Lynn Classical, 8-0, on Oct. 7 at Tedesco. All eight Magicians won their matches, including Matt Weed (36), Christopher Locke (36), Jacob Hershfield (38), Charlie Grenier (35), Marty Ryan (38), Jacob Aizanman (39), Matt Mahan (41) and Adrian Baron (38).
Prior to the win over the Rams, the Marblehead boys also took care of an undermanned Saugus squad the day before, 5-0.
Weed (38), Locke, Hershfield, Grenier and Ryan (37) won the matches, and Locke and Grenier were the medalists after they each shot 35.
Field hockey shut out twice
The Marblehead field hockey team lost to visiting Beverly, 4-0 on Oct. 6. James Marcey and Kealy Satterfield stood out for the Magicians in this game, according to coach Linda Rice Collins. Goalie Maggie Beauchesne came up with eight saves to keep the game close on the scoreboard.
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, Danvers also blanked the Magicians to the tune of 2-0.
Beauchesne once again was sharp in net after coming up with 21 more saves. Kate Bickell, Lane Kaeyer and Marcey were singled out for their fine play by the coach after this game.
Volleyball sweeps past Salem
The Marblehead volleyball team (10-2) beat Salem in three games on Oct. 6, 26-16, 25-12, 25-5.
Keira Sweetnam led Marblehead with 10 kills, while Remington Tilkens was the leader in digs with five, and Julia Potvin had the most aces with seven.
Then on Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Marblehead girls took care of Peabody in five games, 25-17, 17-25, 28-26, 6-25, 17-15.
Isabel Wabno was credited with seven kills and 45 digs to help lead her teammates to another triumph. Sweetnam led the way in kills with 25.
