‘Egregious act of vandalism’ at Piper Field; police investigating car on field

Marblehead Police are investigating an incident overnight of a car smashing through gates at Marblehead High School’s Piper Field and driving onto the field itself, leaving tire marks.

Wednesday morning, Superintendent John Robidoux called it “a very unfortunate, egregious act of vandalism.”

“The incident is still under investigation and the extent of the damage to the field will be determined once the inspection of the field has been completed,” Robidoux wrote in an email to the Current. “We are hopeful that the investigation will come to fruition quickly and that the damage to our beautiful turf field is minimal.”

Police Chief Dennis King released a statement this morning.

“At 6/10/26 at 5:40am, officers responded to 2 Humphrey St., for a report that a vehicle had been driven on the football field. Upon arrival, officers observed damage to the access gate of the field and evidence that operator(s) had driven a vehicle(s) on the field itself. Marblehead Police is conducting an investigation to determine the operator(s) identity and consider this a criminal matter. Those responsible will face applicable criminal charges.”

King’s statement continued: “Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Marblehead Police Department at 781-631-1212 and/or Detective Sergeant Sean Brady, sbrady@marbleheadma.gov, or SRO Sean Sweeney Jr., ssweeneyjr@marbleheadma.gov.”

The community raised $1 million in 2024 to refurbish Piper Field with new turf.
