OBITUARY: Michael S. Butler

Michael S. Butler, “Mike”, age 58, of Marblehead, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 13 surrounded by family, after a 4-year battle with cancer. Mike is survived by his fiancé & life partner, Carol McHugh. Michael was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1983. He attended Northeastern University and was certified as a calibration technician.

Michael was a jack of all trades. He was a certified oil burner technician and worked with his brother-in-law, Greg, at Ed & Vin’s Oil Company in Lynn for many years. As a medical equipment calibration technician, Mike was most recently employed with Acculab Measurement Standards of Beverly. Mike loved old cars and enjoyed working on them. He owned many throughout the years. Michael looked forward to his yearly trip to the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals with his brother-in-law, Greg. Mike could often be found working on his house, renovating his parent’s kitchen or helping a friend putting in a new bathroom.

Mike has been involved with the muster community from a young age. He was the foreman of the Atlantic #1 of Swampscott; current vice-president, past president and past secretary for the Gerry 5 VFA of Marblehead; vice-president for the Okommakamesit VFA of Marblehead and a life member of the New England States Veteran Fireman’s League.

For the past 10 years, Michael has been a Master Mason with the Philanthropic Lodge F. & A. M. of Marblehead. Michael achieved 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was a past Deputy Grand Knight and past Grand Knight in the former Swampscott Council.

In addition to his fiancée, Michael is survived by his sisters, Cynthia Croteau of Marblehead, Maureen Ozoonian and her husband Gregory of Peabody; his sister-in-law, Lisa Butler of Seabrook, NH; his nieces and nephews, Jonathan and Kaitlyn Ozoonian of Peabody, Matthew Ozoonian and Stephanie MacDonald of Peabody, Erin Butler of Methuen, Kristen and Kenneth Brown of South Carolina, Sara and Michael Pennell of Georgetown; his grandnephew, Bentley Butler of Methuen. Mike is also survived by his fiancée’s family, Eileen McHugh of Swampscott, Donna McHugh of Swampscott, Thomas and Wendy McHugh of North Attleboro, John McHugh and Li Zhou of Jamaica Plain, Patrick and Deborah McHugh of Georgia, Sharon McHugh O’Connor of East Longmeadow, Linda and Wayne Godin of Swampscott, Tara McHugh and Julie Davis of Florida along with many nieces and nephews.

Michael is pre-deceased by his parents, Robert L. and Irene Butler; his brother, Robert M. Butler and his brother-in-law, Roger Croteau.

The family thanks the medical staff at Dana Farber, Brigham & Women’s and Spaulding Rehab for their care over the last 4 years.

Service Information: A Funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Rt1A), Lynn followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
