LETTER: An ‘urgent call’ to Generations X,Y and Z

LETTER: An ‘urgent call’ to Generations X,Y and Z

The war in Iran is an urgent call to members of Generation X, Y and Z that we must rise to our destiny, or risk disappearing, as previous generations have, into the mythology of American exceptionalism.  Members of Generation X lost brothers, cousins and friends in a useless war in the Iraq desert, like our parents did in the jungles of Indochina. Yet, around 1980 or so, our parents got on board the gravy train of individualism, high technology and financial engineering, and it’s been…

LETTER: A message to the community from the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce

LETTER: A message to the community from the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce

For more than five decades, the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce has proudly served the town of Marblehead and its vibrant business community. Since the 1960s, the Chamber has worked to promote local commerce, strengthen community ties and celebrate the unique character that makes Marblehead so special. Over the years, the business landscape has evolved dramatically. The rise of the internet, the growth of online retail and national “category busters,” the shift to social media marketing, economic downturns and most recently the challenges of COVID-19 have…

LETTER: Congressman Moulton is wrong about the SAVE Act

LETTER: Congressman Moulton is wrong about the SAVE Act

To the editor: Last month, I asked Seth Moulton’s office what was his rationale for voting against the SAVE ACT. According to the Pew Research Center, 84% of US adults support VOTER ID. Seth is more concerned with political gamesmanship than serving his constituency. Not only is he not serving us by voting for what he was sent to congress to do, but he adds the irony of this statement with his recently proposed safe election legislation, “Election security is vitally important.” His primary objective…

LETTER: MCC ‘such a wonderful place’

The Marblehead Counseling Center is such a wonderful place to turn to when you need help. We are so lucky to have this place in our community. They believe that “effective counseling promotes growth and self healing in a safe, supportive and judgment free environment."  They have many therapists and a few social workers. The team matches you with the best therapist to help you along the way.  You meet each week in a confidential room with your therapist in a judge-free zone. You eventually…

LETTER: Time to collect unpaid debts

LETTER: Time to collect unpaid debts

To the editor:  As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, it is time to recognize unpaid debts due the town of Marblehead for the loans and sacrifices made by its patriotic citizens. Though there were many, I cite for example the contributions and sacrifices made by Col. Jeremiah Lee, Azor Orne, Elbridge Gerry and Gen. John Glover. Colonel Lee, one of the most prominent merchants of the time, was an ardent patriot. He commanded the Marblehead militia, financially supported the efforts to obtain supplies and…

LETTER: Resident asks MPD to stand with town when ICE shows up

To the editor:   During my 60 years here in Marblehead, I have come to know of the dedication of our Police Department in comforting lost children, managing traffic situations and responding when our neighbors face emergencies. That lifelong sense of safety and reassurance was painfully absent on Sept. 12, 2025, when the Department of Homeland Security came to town and took three men into custody without any visible local police presence. The silence and absence of our familiar protectors left many of us shaken and…

LETTER: What is virtue?

LETTER: What is virtue?

Headline: What is virtue? To the editor: This is a question that animates a great many Democratic primary voters: Which candidate is the morally righteous choice? When I contemplate this question I think of Sarah McBride and Jared Golden. They are Democrats who represent Delaware’s at-large congressional district and Maine’s second respectively. Delaware elected Sarah McBride to Congress in 2024, running a point ahead of Kamala Harris by focusing on affordability and access to healthcare. She is also the first and only transgender member of…

LETTER: There is real happiness to be found locally

LETTER: There is real happiness to be found locally

To the editor: Some people say that good fences make for great neighbors. If you've had a bad neighbor, you understand that sentiment well. But in reality, the best neighbors are, well, neighbors.   My family and I had the privilege of being Christine McCarriston's neighbor. You may have known her personally, or you may have known her through her thoughtful and touching articles for the Current. But knowing Chris as a neighbor was such a special way to know her.   My family moved to our…

LETTER: We should follow the ‘Homer Simpson School of Plowing’ etiquette

LETTER: We should follow the ‘Homer Simpson School of Plowing’ etiquette

To the editor: I am writing to express my frustration regarding a recent incident involving a private plow operator. I'd like to offer a kind reminder about basic plow etiquette from the Homer Simpson School of Plowing. On Wednesday morning (Feb. 11), I woke to find our neighbor’s driveway and our stairway to the street, sidewalk and driveway were completely blocked in. A plow operator clearing a private residence across the street pushed fresh snow, ice and slush through our existing five-foot snow wall (left…
