The heat wave didn’t stop locals from traveling around Marblehead to see the Arts Festival’s exhibits Thursday, July 2. The 60th Marblehead Arts Festival exhibits featured about 500 artworks from local artists, categorized into drawings, photography, printmaking and more. “It’s a big showcase opportunity for budding artists to come and show their art,” said Maggie Smist, festival co-chair. For two decades, Marblehead architect Thomas Saltsman has transformed the area outside his Pleasant Street home into a Halloween spectacle, drawing crowds with towering creatures, elaborate machinery and larger-than-life displays. In 1997, Steven M. Rubin submitted one chapter of his then work-in-progress novel, “The Unraveling of Michael Galler” to the Marblehead Arts Festival and won Best of Show.  Now, 30 years later, he has finished — and just published — the novel and is returning to speak at this year’s festival. “Winning Best of Show helped me realize I have a story to tell,” Rubin said. Starting June 19, Marblehead Little Theatre will present “Jagged Little Pill,” the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical featuring songs of Alanis Morissette. It premiered on Broadway in 2019. Marblehead residents Amy and Alf Wilson decided to do something new for their date night on Friday, May 29. For the first time, they went to the annual Cod and Whale first-look party held at Abbot Hall. With dozens of other locals attending, the couple marveled at the 55 cod and 12 whale art pieces on the tables. Amy Wilson said her favorite cod design was a deck of cards. Marblehead actress Nora Falk is preparing for her latest performance — as Rita in the North Shore debut of the play “The Chesapeake Chicks,” a farcical murder mystery.  Originally from Vienna, Austria, Falk has always enjoyed performing, especially singing.
