GUEST COLUMN: When the snowstorm hit, animal rescue went into overdrive

GUEST COLUMN: When the snowstorm hit, animal rescue went into overdrive

Submitted by Kate Thomson of Marblehead Here in the Northeast, we’re well-versed in winter storm prep. Streets get salted, parking bans go into effect, there’s a run on milk, bread and Bailey’s. We hunker down and wait it out. But for animal rescue groups, a major weather event like this can wreak havoc. This weekend, the team at Sweet Paws Rescue in Groveland (MA Rescue License # 0078) was working around the clock to make sure that the 23 puppies and four adults that arrived…

EDITORIAL: A teachable moment

EDITORIAL: A teachable moment

We share the heartbreak and disappointment that the Marblehead High School community — and the broader community — has to confront a disturbing act of bias, the scrawling of swastikas, the n-word and other graffiti in the school’s bathrooms, for which a 15-year-old male student is facing juvenile charges. Our local educators are no doubt familiar with a number of helpful online guides to assist educators in responding to such bias incidents, as Superintendent John Robidoux has already demonstrated an understanding of what a proper…

Tory’s Jewelry celebrating 49 years on Washington Street

By Jewel Farrin With one glance at Tory’s Jewelry, you’d think the owner had a special affinity for the color pink. This is actually not the case for owner Victoria “Tory” Kelley. “I would not paint my house this color pink,” she said. She went with the pink exterior because the store is set back from the street a bit and she was looking for something to grab attention.  What about the pink in the jewelry cases inside?  “It just works well,” said Kelley. Even…

Food 101: Preparing sweet (potato) dreams

Food 101: Preparing sweet (potato) dreams

Sweet potatoes are not yams. We know that even though the two often spill over into one another at the grocery store. You can barely tell the difference. Some cooks use them interchangeably, although a sweet potato, with its dark orange flesh, is a tuber of a different color. Russet potatoes (aka Idaho or baking potatoes) also sit nearby, but they are never confused with sweet potatoes. At the market, look for a firm exterior free of bruises or cuts. At home, store in a…

Marblehead’s most traveled cat?

Marblehead’s most traveled cat?

Riley Sugarman was volunteering at the Marblehead Animal Shelter in June 2020 when a litter of kittens arrived. That’s when she met Freddie. “All his food was completely untouched and then once I came in I reached my hand into the cage and pet him. And he starts eating for the first time. And cats, if they eat in front of you, they trust you so I went home and told my parents. I was like ‘This cat, he's the one,’” said Sugarman.  Freddie waiting…

Editorial: The pink of health

A decade ago, then-Vice President Joe Biden launched the Cancer Moonshot initiative, an ambitious attempt to cut cancer deaths in half over a 25-year period. By some estimates, more than four million lives could be saved. Relaunched in 2022, the program grew to embrace hundreds of government actions and institutional allies, including a wide array of academic institutions, nonprofits and patient groups. All had meaningful stakes in saving and improving the lives of millions. For President Biden, who oversaw formation of a Cabinet-level cancer task…

‘An amazing spectacle to witness’

‘An amazing spectacle to witness’

I was out last month looking for tuna several miles off Marblehead when I spotted this humpback whale feeding on pogies. I saw for probably 45 minutes watching it feed — an amazing spectacle to witness. These whales migrate to the region to feed on fish and krill and are known for their acrobatic behaviors like breaching and tail-slapping, making them a favorite among whale watchers.
