time being, but when we went to retrieve it weeks later, he discovered the money was gone. The man said that the only people who had access to the room in question were his house cleaners, whom he had since fired. He had reported the incident to the owner of the company, who disagreed that his employees could be responsible for the theft. The woman explained that she had been trying to call the business but had not heard back from them. They had also been trying to call the number for the foreman for the job at their home, but it was a company cell phone, and it was going straight to voicemail. Earlier in the day, they had stopped by the business’ location in Peabody, and all the doors were locked. They then asked about the fence company at the autobody shop next door, and they were told that the business had shuttered. The officer attempted to call the business line for the fence company but was unable to connect with anyone. He then called the auto shop next door and heard a similar story that the company was being sold, and everyone had been laid off. Shortly after, the woman called back into the station to say that she had received a text from a man who said that customers who had provided deposits would be refunded next week. The officer called the number and spoke to the man, who explained that he had a buyer for the business and that his attorney was arranging to issue full refunds to a few customers, including the Marblehead couple. The officer relayed this information back to the woman and told her to reach back out if she had not received payment back by the following week.
