After his interaction with the fraudster, the resident first noticed a small charge of 82 cents to his bank account and then a day later an attempted charge of $500, which the resident had been able to work with his bank to stop. The man had since closed the account and the debit card associated with it, and he also placed a freeze on his account with another bank as a precaution. The officer asked whether the Tesla had been in “Sentry mode,” which is a vehicle security system that uses the car’s external cameras and sensors to monitor and record suspicious activity while the vehicle is locked and parked. The man had tried to call the U-Haul rental center in Abington but was redirected to a national line, and U-Haul corporate would not give him any details of the rental other than his own information. The man stated that he was then put in touch with the district manager for the area, who would also not give him any information other than the driver’s license attached to the rental, which was for a woman, who had been given an employee discount. 10:22 a.m. An officer was dispatched to Atlantic Avenue to investigate a report of contents from a vehicle discarded on the sidewalk. Upon his arrival, the officer observed a spare tire to a motor vehicle, plastic bags filled with various items, water bottles, candy and paperwork. All contents looked to have been discarded from the trunk of a motor vehicle, the officer determined. The officer found a name and a phone number on some paperwork that was in one of the plastic bags. A dispatcher called the number and spoke to the owner of the vehicle, who explained that the vehicle had been stolen from a Lynn auto body shop. He was advised to report the incident to Lynn police immediately. The officer gathered up the property that had been strewn about the road and brought it back to the police station. The officer then spoke to a woman who lives on Atlantic Avenue who had heard some metal banging outside. When she looked out the window, she saw a gray vehicle driving away. The woman said she did not see who was driving, just that it headed inbound on Atlantic Avenue.
10:23 a.m. An officer was dispatched to Broughton Road to take a report regarding a past incident that had occurred at Hobbs Playground on Brook Road. Upon his arrival, the officer met with the reporting party outside her home. The woman explained that she had been at the playground with her son and their two dogs when an unidentified woman wearing a black shirt and red-and-white-striped cotton pants began yelling at her that dogs were not allowed at the park. The woman continued that, as she was packing up her belongings, one of her two small, well-mannered dogs slipped away from her grasp and ran over to a tree to have a bathroom break. At that point, the unidentified woman scooped up her own child and performed a kicking motion in the direction of her little dog. The woman stated the dog was not being aggressive towards the woman but was barking in her direction, though she did not believe that warranted the woman’s attempt to kick her dog. As she had explained to the dispatcher, the woman said she had been unable to remain at the park to make the initial report because her son was becoming fussy, and she needed to get him home. The officer then went to Hobbs Playground to try to find the woman in the striped pants, but she had already left the area.

The man stated that he was a boat captain who ties good knots and that he believes that the dinghy did not get free but was untied and stolen by someone. He told the officer that, after he noticed it was gone, he took the launch out and searched the area of the harbor but could not find his dinghy. The man said that he had talked with the harbormaster’s office and learned that they did not have the dinghy, nor had they seen it. The dinghy contained a green hand towel, red gas can and a blue quart of two-cycle oil. There appeared to be no cameras in the vicinity of where the dinghy had gone missing. The officer planned to share his report with detectives.

Upon his arrival, he was met by a homeowner, who explained that her next-door neighbor, who rents his home, had for some reason trimmed the bushes in between their two properties in half, cutting off the part hanging on his property. The officer advised her that this was a civil matter regarding the property line. The officer advised her that the incident would be documented in a report.

The woman explained that she did not know her numbers, but the caller used forceful language, trying to convince her that he needed her banking information. The conversation lasted for several hours, but the woman never provided any banking information, she said. The woman’s granddaughter researched the caller’s number, which came back to a South Carolina resident. Two of the neighbors said that they had called for a
tow truck, which was on its way to tow the car. The officer advised them that they could not just tow a car on a public street because the alarm was going off.
