Hundreds of people gathered at Piper Field Sunday night for a vigil in honor of Marblehead High School senior and football co-captain Owen Coyne, who died Thursday night after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

People lined the field, holding up glowing cellphone flashlights, while about 150 of Coyne’s teammates, friends and family members gathered in a tight huddle at midfield. For nearly an hour, the crowd stood in silence, offering their presence and support to those grieving the 17-year-old’s death.
At the center of the huddle was a simple memorial: Coyne’s No. 18 football jersey, surrounded by electric candles and glow sticks.
Coyne’s family stood among those gathered on the field. At the end of the vigil, they were the first to slowly walk away, followed by a long, silent line of students.
Coyne’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday. Read his obituary HERE.
