The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Marblehead beginning Friday at 5 a.m., as the area braces for a possible Nor’easter that lasts through the weekend.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” according to the NWS. “Power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult… The long duration of the winds coupled with heavy rain and fully leafed trees may exacerbate the risk for tree damage and power outages.”
A high surf advisory and coastal flood watch are also in effect from Friday through Sunday evening.
The rain could start Friday afternoon and last through Monday. The sun is expected to reappear on Tuesdsay.
Marblehead Harbormaster Mark Souza is urging boaters to begin preparing for the storm.
“At this point it looks like a nor’easter will impact the Northeast maritime community,” Souza wrote in an email to the Current.
Souza advised boat owners to secure items on their boats, check that bilge systems are working properly and free of debris, and inspect pennant lines for abrasions or loose attachments.
“If you can haul out for the season I would make those arrangements,” he said.
Souza said wind and sea conditions are expected to be the biggest concerns. Saturday’s high tides are forecast for 11:34 a.m. and 11:54 p.m.
“We will wait to hear from the National Weather services on more details of wind speeds and flooding prediction as the week goes on,” Souza said. “Boaters should pay close attention to the forecast as we know things change very quickly in New England.”
