There’s nothing like making an early season statement in the home opener, no less. That’s what the Marblehead High boys soccer team did against visiting Danvers on Sept. 8 at Piper Field. It was a convincing 7-0 victory, and veteran coach Elmer Magana couldn’t be any happier.
“This was a solid victory over a skillful Danvers team,” said Magana afterwards. “Our quick passing and striking ability was effective against the Falcon defense.”
The team’s first goal came right away, just three minutes into the game on a blast outside the box by captain Mark Vinokur. By halftime, the Magicians were comfortably in front to the tune of 4-0.
In the second half, the Marblehead boys came out possessing the ball to prevent any possible Danvers comeback. Their last three goals were a result of just one or two touches.
Goalie Andrew Halvorson made two key saves, according to Magana, to preserve the shutout. It was his first clean sheet on the varsity level. Defenders Mitchell Leighton, Noah Smerka and Nathaniel Bentley also turned in a solid game. Forward David Magen pressured the Danvers defense all game long. He almost had a hat trick, but still led his teammates on offense with two scores and two assists.
“We were able to play all 20 players on the varsity roster,” said Magana, “and are now moving on to take on rival Swampscott on Monday (Sept. 14 after press deadline).”
Vinokur notched the first goal assisted by Julien Poitevin. Poitevin then got one of his own from David Magen. Quinn Cohane accounted for a goal set up by captain Erik Badzak. Magen chipped in with a score from Judah Spell. Magen followed up that score with another marker on a solo effort. He was then responsible for the next score by Jackson Nutt. Filip Wabno completed the scoring spree with an unassisted tally.
