Senate showdown
Marblehead native and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton is challenging incumbent Sen. Ed Markey for the Democratic nomination for Markey’s Senate seat.
The two Democrats support many of the same policies, including ending the war in Iran, abolishing ICE and healthcare for all.
Moulton, 47, says it’s time for generational change in Washington and that Markey, who is 80, is simply too old to serve another six-year term in the Senate. Markey says Moulton isn’t progressive enough to represent Massachusetts in the Senate.
6th District race
Six Democrats are vying to succeed Moulton in the 6th Congressional District. They are Bethany Andres-Beck, John Beccia, Jamie Zahlaway Belsito, Dan Koh, Mariah Lancaster and Tram Nguyen.
The candidates have emphasized issues including affordability, housing, health care, education, immigration and the role of the federal government. At an Aug. 6 forum in Lynn, the candidates found common ground on issues such as housing costs and health care while drawing distinctions over foreign policy, political experience and the role of government.
On the Republican side, Micah Q. Jones of Essex is the only candidate seeking the GOP nomination, so there will be no Republican primary contest for the seat. The Democratic nominee will face Jones in the Nov. 3 general election.
