‘Glover and His Crucial Leadership in 1776’

Learn about the crucial leadership of John Glover during his time as colonel of the Marblehead Regiment in this talk presented by Larry Sands, captain of the Glover’s Marblehead Regiment reenactment unit. Shell Builders workshop with Salem Sound Coastwatch
Friday, Aug. 28, 2:45-3:30 p.m.
Engineer a super-strong “shell” dome using shapes and simple materials, then load-test it to see how much it can hold. Investigate real snail, mussel and oyster shells at the touch tank and discover how shell shape and structure protect animals from waves and predators. This program is for kids 8-12 years old. Summer Play Readings — new works by local writers
Friday, Aug. 28, 7 p.m.
Marblehead High School teacher and drama director Ashley Skeffington will share her play, “The Mender,” at Marblehead Little Theatre. Three siblings during the Vietnam War, facing a nation divided, discover their differing personal beliefs, what it means to be American, and family bonds. Years later their children come together after a startling discovery. This event is free.
Marblehead 250: Nicholson Broughton, first captain of the privateer Hannah
Wednesday, Sept. 2, 7-8:30 p.m.
Capt. Nicholson Broughton gained fame as the captain of the even more famous schooner Hannah, the “first” official privateer vessel sent out from Marblehead and Beverly waters under a commission from George Washington in service of his Continental Army, on Sept. 2, 1775. This program is led by Town Historian Donald Doliber. It can be attended in person at Abbot Library or by Zoom. More info at abbotlibrary.org.
