To the editor:
I am writing regarding the recent editorial published about the repeal of our town’s social hosting laws.
While I understand the importance of shining a light on community issues, I found the timing of this article deeply insensitive. It was published on the same day our community was observing the one-year anniversary of the passing of a young girl who was tragically killed in a drunk driving crash.
For those of us who knew and loved her, that day carries profound emotional weight. Her loss is exactly why many in our community continue to reflect on underage drinking, adult responsibility and how to better protect our children.
Because of that, the editorial article felt especially painful and dismissive of ongoing grief and efforts to prevent future tragedies. This is not about avoiding discussion of social hosting laws — they should be discussed — but about recognizing that timing matters when a community is still grieving.
I hope the newspaper will consider this perspective in the future. Our community deserves journalism that addresses difficult issues while remaining mindful of the people and families affected.
I would appreciate a response and an apology to the family and community about the poor timing of this and for the future, hope you will take this concern seriously.
