Town to residents: Don’t bring your new barrels to the Assessor’s Office

The town of Marblehead has put out a notice telling residents not to bring their new trash and recycling bins to the Assessor’s Office.

“No abatements, credits or refunds will be issued for returned bins. Questions about trash bins or collection services should be directed to the Board of Health at Health2@MarbleheadMA.gov or 781-631-0212,” the notice reads.

Property owners who opt out of the town’s collection program will still have to pay increased property taxes due to a $2.3 million trash override passed on June 9.

The Current asked the Board of Health and Health Director Andrew Petty how many barrels have been dropped at the Assessor’s Office, but did not get a reply.

Starting July 1, all eligible properties will become part of Marblehead’s curbside collection program unless property owners opt out in writing. (Businesses can pay for town trash pickup. Properties with more than four units are not eligible. Read all the collection regulations below.)

“Property owners who choose to opt out will remain subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the storage, handling, recycling and disposal of solid waste, including requirements to use properly permitted waste haulers when applicable,” according to the statement.

Residents seeking information about property tax exemptions can visit the town’s website for eligibility requirements, applications and guidance from the Assessor’s Department.

The town is also preparing to launch a new Senior Means Exemption program. Once finalized, eligibility requirements, application procedures and program details will be posted on the town website under the Assessor’s Office.

Applicants for the Senior Means Exemption will be required to first apply for the Massachusetts Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit. Additional eligibility criteria will be released when the program information becomes available.
