To the editor:
While many of us are focused heavily on the current fiscal challenges facing our community, Marblehead residents also have another opportunity to provide input to Marblehead’s longer-term future. On Saturday, June 13, the town of Marblehead, MAPC and representatives from the Marblehead Master Plan 2037 Advisory Group, who are guiding this process will host an open house from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Abbot Library to share early findings and gather input, as this group works toward its completion in 2027. Drop in at any time within those hours to hear about the ongoing work and provide your feedback.
The forthcoming master plan provides a roadmap for Marblehead’s growth and evolution over the next decade and beyond. While a master plan does not create new laws or policies, it provides a comprehensive view of the town’s current situation together with a shared vision for the future. The plan provides guidance for the many town departments, boards and committees together with business leaders and developers as these stakeholders make decisions that affect our future.
Didn’t realize that there was such a thing as a 10-year master plan? Not surprising, since the last full-blown plan was completed in 1970, along with an update in 1989. Thanks to our current town Planning Board and the Community Development and Planning Department, work began late last fall on a two-year grant-funded project to develop our next ten-year plan. The Open House on June 13 will touch on topics such as: fiscal & infrastructure sustainability, housing & workforce affordability, multi-modal transportation options, economic vitality and coastal resilience. The Master Plan Advisory Group is a group of 25 people representing many of the relevant boards, commissions and committees as well as elected officials, town employees from key departments, youth representatives and people from faith communities and social services.
As you think about the future of our town and your ballot choices on June 9, please also consider sharing your thoughts and aspirations on June 13 to ensure that Marblehead thrives for generations to come.
