LETTER: A different perspective on 3A

To the editor:

I would like to share a different perspective to the recent criticism of Marblehead’s 3A proposal. The original idea of 3A is to increase housing while minimizing car travel by building near mass transportation.  If we take a long-term view, I believe the current Marblehead 3A proposal has a lot of merit.

From a location point of view, the Tedesco golf course is the best location within Marblehead to develop housing while minimizing travel by car.  It is right next to Vinnin Square and the YMCA, so it is walking distance to almost everything: restaurants, banks, gym (YMCA), grocery stores, hardware, general shopping, liquor stores, pet store…  It is also the closest location to the commuter rail. It is 1.7 miles to the Swampscott commuter rail station, which is an 11 minute bicycle ride (35 minute walk). Although the focus of recent discussion has been on Tedesco, Broughton Road is part of the proposal and that is being developed.

Will the golf course always be there? I honestly don’t know. I suspect it will be there for a while, but a golf course in Lynnfield recently sold part of its land to be used for housing. All I am pointing out is from a location point of view, this is the ideal location for housing. Thank you.
