Dr. Barbara Carter Moore, 100, of Marblehead and Swampscott, died Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at her home in The Residence at Vinnin Square.
She was born in 1925, the daughter of John and Rhena (Tomlin) Carter. She grew up in Massachusetts and Missouri. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Bates College and an M.D. from Syracuse University. She began a career in radiology with residency training at Temple University Medical Center.

She became a prominent radiologist, serving at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, then, for many years, at Tufts Medical Center (formerly New England Medical Center). She was a pioneer in the use of CT scans, publishing at least 85 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as many book chapters. She was chief of ENT radiology at Tufts for decades. She was also a popular and skillful teacher, receiving the Teacher of the Year award 11 times at Tufts University School of Medicine.
In 1960, she married Jeffery Moore, M.D., who was also a prominent radiologist. They shared a loving marriage for nearly 50 years, until Jeff’s death in 2010. Together, they enjoyed sailing their 30-foot sailboat and traveling to many places around the world. They were actually able to visit all seven continents. Their friends and relatives always enjoyed their delightful stories of work and travels.
Survivors include seven nieces and nephews: Deborah Furlone and her husband Mark, Ruth Turner and her husband Brent, Stephen Carter and his wife Debbie, Jo Ellen Carter, Philip Carter and his wife Carol Heim, Nancy Atkinson and her husband Mike, and David Carter and his wife Mary Ellen. She will also be missed by numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and by her caring and supportive health aide of the last five years, Yosary Altagracia.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held in Salem on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. All who would like to attend are asked to email the family at celebratebarbara2026@gmail.com or call 413-345-1294 to receive location details.
