The Marblehead Youth Hockey Cross-Ice hockey team recently returned home with well-earned silver medals after competing in the Fish Sticks Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cape Ann Youth Hockey in Gloucester.
Besides Marblehead, the Beverly and Cape Ann clubs also took part in the tournament that’s specifically designed to offer a rewarding, enjoyable conclusion to the long, arduous season, which started way back in September.
“This tournament is the perfect note to end on,” said Marblehead Youth Hockey coach David Morczinek. “These players are tasked with mastering the most difficult sport on earth. It’s amazing to see them try so hard, do so well and at the same time have fun all the way through it.”
The Marblehead gang made it to the final game, where they went up against the Cape Ann Gold Club, the tournament favorites.
After playing three periods of scoreless hockey, both teams went to a shootout to determine a winner. Marblehead got on the board first after Oska Morczinek buried a low shot into the net. But the feisty Cape Ann squad answered back, and eventually ended up taking Fish Sticks Gold in Round 5.
“I had so much fun,” said Header power forward Molly Costello. “This is my first hockey tournament, and I (ended up winning) a silver medal. I can’t wait (to play more) hockey again next year.”
