LETTER: Calm has returned to the school board

To the editor:

The Marblehead School Committee deserves recognition for bringing calm, steady and effective leadership back to our schools. In June 2025, our community came together and voiced our demand for change to a board that had brought years of chaos and turmoil to Marblehead Public Schools. Henry Gwazda and Kate Schmeckpeper were elected by an overwhelming margin, and this change has far exceeded expectations.

This past year, we’ve seen meaningful progress on long-standing challenges. The Marblehead High School roof project — which had been largely ignored by the previous facilities subcommittee — was put back on track by Facilities Subcommittee and Roof Project Chair Henry Gwazda. Henry solicited community input by bringing together a team of knowledgeable and collaborative community members.

The result speaks for itself: The School Committee unanimously approved a contract that came in more than $2 million under budget — with a construction timeline that targets completion by fall 2026.

The welcome addition of Melissa Clucas brought on a talented communicator and collaborator with financial expertise to the budget subcommittee. These are examples of the kind of real fiscal responsibility and forward momentum Marblehead deserves.

Equally notable is the fact that this committee has a renewed focus on good governance. Under Policy Subcommittee Chair Kate Schmeckpeper, 86 policy updates have been reviewed and approved in just 10 months. By comparison, only ONE policy was updated in the prior two years. That sole policy was the highly contested and politically charged “flag ban.”

This success reflects the majority of our committee members’ commitment to keeping our district policies functional and current, rather than unnecessarily fixating on divisive political issues, which created such negativity.

Under Chair Al Williams and Vice Chair Schmeckpeper, this committee has reestablished much needed trust. Regular subcommittee meetings are recorded and publicly available, which ensures that the public has the ability to be informed and engaged. The committee’s tone has dramatically shifted to one of steady leadership that effectively supports the superintendent and his administration.

This new era didn’t happen by accident. In June 2025, Marbleheaders demanded change, and the new members answered. Their disciplined focus on student well-being and achievement is restoring trust in, and the reputation of, our district. This School Committee is delivering, and we are grateful. Thank you!
