BREAKING NEWS: Snow emergency parking ban ends Saturday at 7 p.m.

***Feb. 7 update: Marblehead Police Chief Dennis King said the town’s snow emergency parking ban will end Saturday at 7 p.m.

King reported “a couple accidents” due to the snow.

“Would like to emphasize that putting the snow back into the street is prohibited and interferes with town clean up,” he emailed the Current. “Residents or their contractors who do this if identified would be responsible to go back and remove the snow form the street and back on to their property. Common sense says put your snow onto your own property where accessible — front or backyard, etc. And, we want people to be careful and prepapred for the extreme overnight cold weather.”

With yet another a winter storm expected to start Friday evening with extreme cold, and snow beginning Friday
night and continuing into Saturday evening, the town of Marblehead is declaring a snow emergency
parking ban and offering residents tips to handle the extreme weather conditions.

The parking ban begins Friday at 11:45 p.m.

“Due to the unpredictably and length of this storm event, the ban will not be lifted until the road conditions are safe,” according to a message from the town Friday afternoon.

“When the ban is lifted, communications through social media and the town website will be provided. Residents and visitors are urged to plan and park responsibly to help keep roadways clear and safe throughout this winter weather event prior to the Friday parking ban at 11:45 p.m.”

During the parking ban, it will be illegal to park any vehicle, including boats and trailers, on any public way.

Any vehicle, boat or trailer that is not off the public way during the ban will be subject to being ticketed and or towed. Depositing snow and ice, on or against a fire hydrant, or on any sidewalk or roadway is prohibited.

If your vehicle is towed during a snow emergency, you should call the Marblehead Police Department at 781-631-1212 to confirm the location of your vehicle. All vehicles are towed to the designated town tow lot at the Transfer Station at 5 Woodfin Terrace or 171 Boston St., Salem, by Todisco Towing.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed, limit travel when possible and take the following necessary precautions to remain safe during the storm.

● Make sure your house number is clear of snow and can be seen from the street. If you need
help, first responders will be able to find you.
● Be ready in case the power goes out. Have flashlights on hand. Also, have battery-powered
lighting and fresh batteries. Never use candles.
● Stay aware of the weather forecast. Listen to the television or radio for updates. The town
website and police/fire social media pages will post updates.
● Check on neighbors. Check on others who may need help.
● Generators should be used outdoors. Keep them away from windows and doors. Do not run a
generator inside your garage, even if the door is open.
● Stay away from downed wires. Report any downed wires to 911.
● Be ready if the heat stops working. Use extra layers of clothes and blankets to stay warm. If you
use an emergency heat source, keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away.
● Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room and turn them off when you go to bed.
